The old gold-rush era railroad grade is now the scenic drive called Gold Camp Road. Suddenly the road pops out of trees with this incredible vista of Pike's Peak granite. This picturesque pond is created by a filled in train tressle, which acts like a dam and backs up in very wet years. I arrived just as a storm was clearing, creating great illumination on the cliffs and brilliant green colors. It was impossible to paint on location, due to both gusty winds and the steep drop-offs of the roadbed, so I painted it later in my studio.
